“The program can’t start because c4.dll is missing from your computer.” The c4.dll file belongs to Waves C4, not Windows, so the safest repair is to restore the Waves plug-in through its official installer rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches what you see:
- A DAW or Pro Tools session reports
c4.dllmissing: reinstall the matching Waves C4 generation, then rescan plug-ins. - Only an old project fails: the project may require a legacy Waves version that is no longer installed.
- C4 is installed but does not appear in the plug-in list: check the Waves folder, WaveShell installation, VST3 paths, and the DAW’s failed-plug-in cache.
- The error started after an update, cleanup, or antivirus alert: check quarantine and repair the Waves installation.
- The message mentions
0xc000007b, an entry point, or an incompatible binary: investigate 32-bit/64-bit architecture and version compatibility. - An unrelated executable requests
c4.dll: identify that program before assuming the file is a genuine Waves component. - Windows itself has broader file or component errors: use DISM and System File Checker as secondary repairs. These do not normally restore a third-party Waves plug-in.
Before changing anything, capture the complete error dialog and note the executable or DAW name shown in it. The requesting program matters because another application could use the same filename without being part of Waves C4.
What is c4.dll?
c4.dll is associated with Waves Audio’s C4 Multiband Parametric Processor, now marketed as the C4 Multiband Compressor. C4 performs multiband compression, expansion, limiting, and equalization.
It is an application plug-in file, not a Windows system DLL. Do not copy it into:

The file is mainly associated with older Waves plug-in formats. Modern Waves installations commonly use versioned plug-in components and a WaveShell, rather than requiring you to manage c4.dll manually.
Publicly indexed DLL metadata is inconsistent and should not be used to identify an authentic current file. File size, version, and architecture records found on third-party pages are not authoritative Waves release information.
Fix 1: Reinstall C4 through Waves Central
This is the primary fix when C4 was removed, damaged, incompletely installed, or quarantined.

- Close the DAW, Pro Tools, Waves applications, and any plug-in scanner.
- Download Waves Central from Waves.
- Install Waves Central using the normal Windows installer.
- Open the Start menu and select All apps.
- Open Waves Central.
- Sign in to the Waves account that owns or manages the C4 license.
- Select Install Products.
- Choose My Products to see products assigned to your account. Use All Products if C4 is not listed there.
- Locate C4 or C4 Multiband Compressor.
- Select the appropriate Waves version.
- Click Install or Install & Activate.
- Accept the default installation locations unless your studio has a documented custom layout.
- Restart Windows if Waves Central requests it.
- Start the DAW and run its plug-in rescan.
The exact product name can vary because C4 was historically described as the C4 Multiband Parametric Processor. If your old project was created with a particular Waves generation, do not automatically replace it with the newest available generation.
A successful repair normally has one of these results:
- C4 appears in the DAW’s Waves plug-in browser.
- The old project opens without the missing-file message.
- Waves Central reports that the product is installed and activated.
- The DAW completes its scan without marking C4 as failed.
If Waves Central does not list C4, verify the account, license status, and product generation. If installation fails, close all audio software, check available storage and permissions, temporarily disconnect VPN software, and retry. Waves notes that VPN software can interfere with Waves Central licensing and installation.
Fix 2: Install the matching legacy Waves version
An old session may depend on a Waves V9, V10, or another earlier plug-in generation. Installing a current component alone may not make that saved instance load correctly.

- The Waves version used when the project was saved.
- The DAW version.
- Whether the host is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The Windows version.
- Whether the project requires VST, VST3, or AAX.
Then:
- Close the DAW.
- Obtain the appropriate legacy installer through Waves’ documented route.
- Install the required Waves generation.
- Keep the old project’s plug-in generation consistent with its WaveShell components.
- Open the DAW.
- Run a full plug-in rescan.
- Open the project and confirm that C4 loads.
Do not mix an old C4 binary with unrelated modern WaveShell files. Multiple Waves versions can coexist, but Waves says that arrangement is no longer officially tested or supported. Keep a backup of the project before replacing plug-ins or saving it in a way that could remove the original instance.
Waves lists C4 compatibility across versions V17 through V9, but that does not mean every version works with every DAW and Windows combination. Host support and plug-in format still determine whether a particular installation can load.
Fix 3: Check the Waves and VST3 plug-in locations
Sometimes the plug-in is installed correctly but the DAW is scanning a different location.

The standard Waves Windows folder is versioned, for example:
C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V17
The version may instead be V16, V15, V14, V13, V12, V11, V10, or V9.

To check the installation:
- Quit the DAW.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the versioned Waves plug-in directory.
- Look for the installed C4 component and WaveShell files.
- Open the DAW’s plug-in settings.
- Confirm that the correct Waves or VST3 folder is included.
- Remove obsolete duplicate custom paths if they point to an incomplete old installation.
- Start a full rescan, not only a quick scan.
- Clear or reset the DAW’s failed-plug-in cache if it offers that option.
If you use a custom VST folder, follow Waves’ custom VST/VST3 folder guidance. Waves VST2 and VST3 behavior differs by generation, and Waves says VST2 is not supported from V15 onward.
If only one old project fails, create a blank session and search for C4. If C4 works in a new session, the problem may be the project’s saved plug-in format, an obsolete WaveShell reference, or an unavailable legacy version rather than a globally missing installation.

Fix 4: Check activation and compatibility
A plug-in can be present on disk but unavailable because its license is not activated or because the host cannot load its architecture.
In Waves Central:
- Sign in.
- Open the product or license-management area.
- Confirm that C4 is assigned to the correct account.
- Activate or install the product on the intended computer or license device.
- Restart the DAW.
- Rescan the plug-in.
Then confirm compatibility:
- Is the DAW 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Is the installed Waves generation supported by that host?
- Is the plug-in format supported by the DAW?
- Is the Windows installation 64-bit while an old project expects a 32-bit plug-in?
- Did the error begin after moving from an older Waves generation to a newer one?
Waves states that V14 is 64-bit only. A 32-bit legacy DLL cannot be made into a 64-bit plug-in by copying it to another folder. Use a compatible host and Waves version, or open the project in the environment for which it was created.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a plug-in after an update or repair operation.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for a blocked or quarantined Waves file.
- Confirm that its location is inside the expected Waves installation directory.
- Check its publisher or digital signature where available.
- Restore it only when the Waves installation context is trustworthy.
- Reinstall C4 through Waves Central afterward.
- Rescan the DAW.
Do not restore a file simply because its name is c4.dll. If it appears in a random download folder, a temporary directory, or an unrelated application directory, treat it as unverified and scan it.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when the evidence points there
A missing Waves plug-in is not normally repaired by Windows system-file commands. Use this step when Windows reports broader corruption, several unrelated applications fail, or the error includes a system component problem.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall Waves C4 through Waves Central.
- Rescan the DAW.
Microsoft documents these steps in its guide to System File Checker. DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected system files; they do not directly restore a missing third-party Waves file.

Fix 7: Consider drivers only when the host has broader audio failures
A missing c4.dll message is not normally a driver problem. Driver work is appropriate when the DAW also loses its audio device, crashes while opening any plug-in, or reports a device or graphics failure.
To inspect audio drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Select Properties.
- Check the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the DAW again.
Do not remove a working audio driver solely because c4.dll is missing. Do not use regsvr32 for this plug-in
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 c4.dll
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes it as a registration tool for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
A normal audio plug-in DLL is not automatically a COM server. Running regsvr32 may produce an error saying that the entry point was not found, which does not repair DAW discovery. Use Waves Central and the DAW’s plug-in scanner instead. Only register a component when the vendor’s installer explicitly requires it.
Why standalone DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid downloading c4.dll from random DLL websites and copying it into a system directory. That approach can provide:
- Malware or a tampered binary.
- The wrong Waves generation.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A file that does not match the installed WaveShell.
- A component that is present but unlicensed.
- No repair for the DAW’s plug-in cache or scan path.
The safe source is the official Waves installation route through Waves Central or the documented legacy installer for the required generation.
If c4.dll still will not load
Collect this information before contacting Waves support:
- The complete error text.
- The executable or DAW requesting the file.
- Windows version and system architecture.
- DAW name and version.
- Waves version and C4 generation.
- Whether the project is old or newly created.
- The Waves plug-in folder path.
- Whether the DAW sees other Waves plug-ins.
- Any antivirus quarantine action.
- The Waves Central installation or activation error.
- Whether C4 works in a blank project.
Also note where any c4.dll file was found. A file outside a Waves installation directory should not be assumed genuine.

FAQ
Is c4.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to Waves Audio’s C4 plug-in and should not be copied into System32 or SysWOW64.

The complete error dialog and executable name provide the answer. It may be a DAW, a Pro Tools session, a Waves-related process, or an unrelated application using the same filename.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Only when the full error specifically identifies one of those dependencies. They are not the normal fix for a missing Waves C4 plug-in.
Why is C4 installed but invisible?
The DAW may be scanning the wrong folder, using a stale failed-plug-in cache, or expecting a different Waves generation or format. Check the versioned Waves directory and run a full rescan.
Can I use a newer C4 version with an old project?
Sometimes, but do not assume compatibility. A project may require its original Waves generation, WaveShell, format, and host architecture.

It commonly indicates a wrong architecture, damaged binary, or incompatible dependency. Check the 32-bit/64-bit combination and reinstall the matching Waves version rather than copying another DLL.
Will System Restore fix c4.dll?
It is only a fallback diagnostic. Reinstalling the Waves product is the primary repair for this third-party plug-in.
Prevent another C4 loading failure
Keep installers or documented recovery steps for the Waves generation used by important projects. Before removing an old Waves version, open archived sessions and confirm that C4 still loads. Avoid moving WaveShell or VST folders manually, keep antivirus exclusions limited and deliberate, and record the DAW, Waves version, plug-in format, and installation path for each production system.
